Perception and Multimodality

چکیده
1 Unimodal approaches to the study of perception Sometimes you turn to look at the source of a clunk. Sometimes you see a pan on the stove and grasp its hot handle. Sometimes you smell the pepper you taste, or find a stinky dead mouse under the sink. In each case, you perceive using more than one sense. You hear the sound and see its source. You feel and see the handle. You smell and taste the pepper. You see and smell the mouse. And yet, most work on perception by philosophers and cognitive scientists has focused on vision. Empirical psychologists catalog visual illusions and deficits because they want to discover perceptual principles and mechanisms. Philosophers analyze visual experience to explain what we perceive and how we perceive it. This focus makes sense since vision is central to how most humans experience, understand, and navigate their surroundings. Focusing exclusively on vision is risky. Nothing guarantees that what holds of seeing holds generally of perceiving. What is essential to seeing might not be essential to perceiving, and certain requirements on perceiving might lack salience in the visual case. Impressive diversity among the varieties of perceiving also might go underappreciated. Attention to the contrasts among smelling a scallion's odor, hearing the sounds of a colleague's footsteps, and

Induction of micronuclei in a transplantable murine tumor after multimodality treatment with cis-platin, radiation and hyperthermia
Background: Tumor response after multimodality treatment using combination of radiation, chemotherapeutic drugs and hyperthermia usually assessed by parameters such as tumor growth delay, volume doubling time and regression response. The study herein was conducted to investigate the usefulness of micronucleus assay for assessing the multimodality treatment. Materials and Methods: The ...
متن کاملAesthetic Symbolic and Communicative Functions of English Signs in Urban Spaces of Jordan: Typography, Multimodality, and Ideological Values
This study examines the visual aesthetic function of English signs in line with ethnographic approaches as a means of achieving various symbolic and communicative implications in the linguistic landscape (LL) of Jordan. Having coded the data in 6 urban streets of the major Jordanian cities, the social semiotic analysis centers on the visual layout of signs based on the typographical features of...
متن کاملA Novel Subsampling Method for 3D Multimodality Medical Image Registration Based on Mutual Information
Mutual information (MI) is a widely used similarity metric for multimodality image registration. However, it involves an extremely high computational time especially when it is applied to volume images. Moreover, its robustness is affected by existence of local maxima. The multi-resolution pyramid approaches have been proposed to speed up the registration process and increase the accuracy of th...
متن کاملOxford Handbook to Philosophy and Cognitive Science
Philosophers and cognitive scientists of perception by custom have investigated individual sense modalities in relative isolation from each other. However, perceiving is, in a number of respects, multimodal. The traditional sense modalities should not be treated as explanatorily independent. Attention to the multimodal aspects of perception challenges common assumptions about the content and ph...
متن کاملUprising in “Uprising”: A Multimodal Analysis of Bob Marley’s Lyrics
This paper investigates how the theme of uprising is conveyed in Bob Marley’s final music album by the name “Uprising”. Through the methodological lenses of multimodality, attention is focused on how the album cover design, lexical items, literary devices, and other aesthetic ways such as the titles of the ten songs of the album and their order of arrangement contribute to the overall theme of ...
